Colistin Sulfate Soluble Powder Instructions for Use

Veterinary Drug Name
  • Generic Name: Colistin Sulfate Soluble Powder

  • English Name: Colistin Sulfate Soluble Powder

  • Chinese Pinyin: Liusuan Nianjunsu Kerongxingfen

Active Ingredient

Colistin

Properties

This product is a white or almost white powder.

Pharmacological Actions
  • Pharmacodynamics: Colistin is a polypeptide antibiotic and a basic cationic surfactant. It exerts its bactericidal effect by interacting with phospholipids in the bacterial cell membrane, penetrating the membrane, disrupting its structure, and altering membrane permeability, leading to bacterial death. It is highly effective against aerobic Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coliHaemophilusKlebsiellaPasteurellaPseudomonas aeruginosaSalmonella, and Shigella. Gram-positive bacteria are generally insensitive. Complete cross-resistance exists with polymyxin B, but no cross-resistance occurs with other antibiotics.

  • Pharmacokinetics: Oral administration results in negligible absorption, but non-gastrointestinal routes allow rapid absorption. The drug distributes quickly into the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and skeletal muscles but does not easily penetrate the cerebrospinal fluid, pleural cavity, joint cavities, or infected lesions. It is primarily excreted via the kidneys.

Drug Interactions
  1. Concurrent use with neuromuscular blockers (e.g., muscle relaxants, aminoglycosides) may cause muscle weakness or respiratory arrest.

  2. Synergistic effects against Pseudomonas aeruginosa when combined with chelating agents (e.g., EDTA) or cationic detergents, often used for topical infections.

Indications

A polypeptide antibiotic used primarily to treat intestinal infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria.
